Windward Oahu Business Expo Presentation: Leveraging for Linchpins

My School, Le Jardin Academy, along with the Kailua Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2012 Windward Business Expo

and asked me to present. I decided that the most applicable topic would be my Personal Branding presentation from Punahou Lab School (augmented to include a business leader perspective). I fashioned the title after Seth Godin’s marvelous book: Linchpin.

Leveraging Tech for Linchpins

If you are an entrepreneur, or a creative leader in your field, you are more significant than your current situation. It’s time to leverage the web to show how indispensible you are. This workshop offers tips on clever and responsible use of social media, as well as elegant and innovative tools to augment your digital presence and networking. It was difficult to prepare for, as I had just returned from 3 separate presentations in Canada and the SOTF conference (my presentation on Data Viz in the classroom), AND I was nursing a fever. All went well, however.

Infographicmania! Schools of the Future Conference, 2012

The “Stained glass windows of our century”

I think I’ve always been a little obsessed with data visualization – perhaps it’s because I have a thing for mid-century minimalism and many “infographics” and other examples of data viz embody that.

Like this one:

In the past couple of years I’ve used data visualization in the high school classroom in the Theory of Knowledge course (as an exploratory theme addressing sense perception, the arts, the nature of data/information, etc.) and in World History (as a culminating unit project).

Personally, I think analyzing, interpreting, critiquing, and even creating visualizations with data sets is an essential part of media literacy.

I’ve been a part of the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools‘ Schools of the Future grant program (and a team member at my school) for the past 4 years. In 2011 I co-presented in a workshop about E-Portfolios (which led to some of my personal branding efforts later).

For this year’s SOTF Conference at the Hawaii Convention Center I was privileged to present

Once again, I found that creating an HTML website using Wix allowed me to embed and organize all the elements I wanted, set up a contact page for further queries, and offer the attendees something of a “digital goodie bag” to take home.

BCSSTA Conference and High School Presentations

In Spring of 2011 I was asked by Dale Martelli, an excellent B.C. teacher and fan of my YouTube work, to do a little meet-n-greet with his bevy of History students visiting Hawaii (because we have Pearl Harbor and all that jazz). We had a great time chatting it up about education at dinner, and he promptly asked if I would consider applying to speak at the British Columbia Social Studies Teachers‘ annual conference (BCSSTA) in the Fall. I’ve always loved Vancouver, so I really couldn’t pass it up. In the end I met some wonderful people (both fellow educators and students), and received some excellent feedback.

I. Crofton House (students of Brenda Ball; teachers)

I was greeted at the YVR airport Wed., Oct. 17 by the energetic and stunning Brenda Ball (@misssball ).

She joined me later at my hotel (the Moda Hotel– highly recommend) for a bite to eat and a bit of a chat. What wonderful food and convo! It would be the first of many dinner dates.

The next day (rainy, go figure) I was dropped off by cab to the lovely Crofton House (an all girls’ school) where Brenda had scheduled some time for me to meet with her upperclassmen History students, and then do a brief P.D. session with a small group of teachers.

As one can see, the facilities were modern and exquisite – and there were Macs everywhere! And tea!

I decided that, for the students, I’d give what I’d hope would be a humorous but poignant look into the Creative Process and what I’ve learned from my experiences stemming from the History for Music Lovers Project.

I developed a Keynote presentation with lots of images, a simple font, and a sprinkling of embedded video. I encouraged students to tweet through the presentation, and a couple took me up on it (using the hashtag #cr8 )

It was broken into 4 parts:

1. Triumph Over Adversity

2. Creativity

3. Storytelling

4. Guides for Life

Curated Learning at Punahou Lab

While there, I gave a guest presentation on

Personal Branding for Educators and Students.

Basically, I curated videos, articles, and exemplars to demonstrate the power of and necessity to create and manage your own personal brand, as well as to encourage students to do likewise.

I put everything together in a Wix site and navigated through it during my presentation. That way, participants could have a “goodie bag” to take home and explore further.

Kukulu Kaiaulu: aka the Kamehameha Conference with Michael Wesch

I really wanted to go to this conference, even if it meant rushing to get my grades turned in early (the caveat so I could attend). The main reason was Michael Wesch.

I was first made aware of Wesch when Alejandro Piscitelli mentioned us both in the same sentence.

Then, after meeting Curt Bonk and speaking at the AACE conference, I noticed he’d gone to visit and interview Wesch.

I have to admit I was more than thrilled to go to his session and hear his keynote. He was approachable, kind, inspiring, and intelligent- everything a speaker / educator should be!

I’ve showed many of Wesch’s videos in my Theory of Knowledge course when we discuss “rethinking education”, and the students really dig him.

The first keynote was Will Richardson. He has a great message, but I was a bit disappointed how similar it was to this talk, which I had just shared with my students.

Some other highlights were connecting with fellow Hawaii educators Elizabeth Garrison of St. Anthony School (we worked together on the Schools of the Future e-portfolio presentation in 2010), Billie Napoleon of Mid-Pac and Doug Kiang from Punahou (after working together at Punahou Lab and speaking at Ignite, we are both now interested in leading a cohort for next year’s Punahou Lab).

IGNITE Honolulu #4: Parody-So

While meeting with fellow TEDxHonoluluEd curator Casey Agena about my session on Personal Branding at Punahou Lab School, 2012, he asked if I would like to present an “Ignite” talk. The event was to be sort of a culminating fanfare for Punahou Lab, and featured a few educators from Punahou and other schools, as well as some incredible tech/geek-cool people.

The format of an Ignite talk is a bit like pecha kucha – you have only 5 minutes on stage to share 20 slides, which advance automatically after displaying for 15 seconds.

I was really stressed about the fact that I couldn’t use my trusted Prezi format, but would have to go with PowerPoint (yuk) or Apple’s Keynote (this was my first time trying keynote professionally).

Keynote is stunning and simple in its design, and I was able to do some animations as far as the text floating in (not shown in the pdf to follow).

As for the topic, they wanted me to share something related to my experience with History for Music Lovers, but I knew I needed a twist and should make it slightly humorous, yet informative. I went with a play on words – “PARODY-SO”, like Dante Alighieri’s Paradiso in the Divine Comedy. It worked out great- I was able to relate a lot of points back to some Divine Comedy analogies, and stress, that, like Dante’s trip, our trip has been both wild and inspiring…we’ve really learned quite a bit from putting ourselves “out there”.

I practiced to get the timing just right, but the night prior to the event, (this was after the dress-rehearsal), I was told that my timing was all off due to the transitions and animation, and that we’d have to shave off about about 8 minutes! More practicing…I felt like Robin Williams! I ended up cutting some dialogue out, but in the end was satisfied.

In the end it was a great evening with amazing peers and lots of mingling – even did a bit of karaoke afterwards!
